Low-Cost Vaccination/Micro-Chipping at Bigwag

Hey Everyone!

I am happy to announce that Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue is going to hold another low-cost vaccination/micro-chipping clinic at Bigwag!  The one we held last year was very successful and I look forward to this one being successful as well!  The information is as follows:

When: Saturday, June 12th, 10am-2pm

Where: Bigwag Dog Bakery; 2301 W. Walnut Ste 23 Rogers, AR 72756 (behind Popeye's Chicken)

What: Low-Cost Vaccination & Micro-chipping clinic hosted by Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue

Cost: Rabies $10; Parvo/Distemper $10; Bordetella $10; FVRCP $10; Feline Leukemia $12; 

Microchipping $20 (Microchips are on the 24 hour Petwatch system)

There are no appointments taken.  Everyone will be seen on a first come, first serve basis.  You may want to bring lawn chairs and water for yourself and your dog or cat.  For more information you may contact us at (479) 631-2WAG.

Poker for Pets

Hey Everyone!

Last Saturday, April 17th, Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue held their 2nd Annual Charity Poker Tournament.  The tournament helps raise money for the animals that NWAAR cares for, which includes many of the cats you see at Petco, Lucky and countless others.  They're also raising money toward the goal of having a mobile spay/neuter unit for Northwest Arkansas.  Spaying and neutering will help reduce the populations of unwanted animals and is really the only way to empty our shelters and Humane Societies!

Mary Lou Pohlman just sent me some of the first pictures from the event and when I get more details on how much the event raised and who won the 50" plasma TV, I will pass those details on!

A Lucky Update

Hey Everyone!

For those of you who have been following Lucky's progress, we have a new update!  (If you aren't familiar with Lucky's story you can read it by clicking the link and you can read the last update here)

Lucky's foster mom brought him into the store last night on his way home from New Hope Animal Hospital.  Lucky was neutered yesterday, to make him ready for a future forever home.  Even after surgery, Lucky was doing great!  His foster mom tells us that he runs and plays with her other dogs and is just as sweet and gentle as can be.  She says he's like a brother to her lab and she'd love to keep him if she didn't already have a full house.  She also tells us that Lucky may have found a forever home with a great family who loves their dogs so much they share a walk and a donut every morning!  That sounds like the type of great home that a dog like Lucky deserves.

Even though Lucky is doing much better, Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue still needs help covering the enormous expenses incurred from Lucky's surgery at Oklahoma State.  If Lucky's story has touched your heart, we ask that you'd please send a donation to:

PLEASE Help us Help Lucky

Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue asked me to pass this story on.  If you can help Lucky, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is Lucky.  A good natured, happy to be here, tail waggin' kind of guy.  He also has a survivor's instinct and a strong will to live.  Lucky was found lying in a ditch after being hit by a car.  He was transported to a holding facility where he went three weeks without medical attention while it was being determined whether he should be euthanized.  Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue heard of his story and determined that he should be given every opportunity available for life.  Volunteers from the NWAAR transported Lucky to a local veterinarian where he was X-rayed to determine the extent of his injuries.  X-rays showed one hip severly dislocated and one hip completely shattered.  X-rays also picked up buckshot which leads us to believe the car accident was not the only unfortunate incident Lucky has survived.  New Hope Animal Hospital examined Lucky and after viewing his X-rays and determining the severity of his injuries could not understand how Lucky was even able to walk.  The pain must have been excruciating.  New Hope Animal Hospital veterinarians contacted Oklahoma State Universitry a secured Lucky an appointment to see if there was anything that could be done.  Volunteers from NWAAR transported Lucky to Oklahoma State University where we recieved the good news that Lucky's injuries could be repaired.  Both of Lucky's hips have now been surgically repaired and he is currently undergoing physical therapy.  The prognosis is that Lucky should be able to live a normal, happy, pain free life.  Upon his release from Oklahoma State the volunteers of NWAAR have committed to continuing Lucky's physical therapy and rehabilitation until he can be placed in his forever home.

Feral Cat Condos

Hey Everyone!

Did you know that Friday, October 16th is National Feral Cat Day? It's a day meant to raise awareness about feral cats as well as recognize the importance of spaying and neutering. You can read more about Feral Cat Day at the Alley Cat Allies website.

Here in NWA, the Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue does a lot of work to care for stray and feral cats, including raising money for a mobile spay/neuter clinic, fostering homeless animals and finding those animals forever homes. I recently received an e-mail from Amanda Bell of Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue with some pictures of feral cat condos made from old styrofoam coolers. NWAAR will be meeting on October 29th so that Amanda can demonstrate how to make these homes. If you're interested in volunteering at NWAAR or have old stryofoam coolers that you would like to donate to create winter housing for feral cats, contact NWAAR at 479-439-7978 or spaynwa@yahoo.com. Stolen Kitten

STOLEN KITTEN

Petco and the Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue want a stolen kitten returned immediately. Emmitt, a ten week old kitten has been missing since Monday. The discovery came when his new adoptive family arrived to pick him up. Petco employees say his cage was open and one employee reported seeing a man and woman walking out of the store with a kitten like Emmitt. "If anybody knows where he is, just bring him back, we just want him back safe," says Mandy Keenen, Founder of the Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue. "We're not going to be mad or upset with anybody we just want him back safe because his new home is waiting on him." The employee described the man with the kitten as roughly five-foot-six, heavy-set, with thinning hair and wearing a red shirt. Hey Everyone!

Pam Lamb was kind enough to drop off more pictures of Saturday's low cost micro-chipping/vaccination clinic sponsored by Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue, so I thought I'd post them here. She tells me that over 100 dogs were micro-chipped/vaccinated Saturday. That's awesome. That mean more dogs who will find their way home if they're ever lost and fewer dog who will get preventable illnesses. Thanks to Dr. Harper and Angie for all their hard work as well as to all the volunteers from NWAAR!

Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament

Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue held their first annual Texas Hold’em poker tournament November 8^th, 2008 to help raise funds for a mobile spay-neuter clinic, cover NWAAR operating costs and to protect animals. Over sixty five people came to watch and participate in Northwest Arkansas Animal Rescue’s first annual Texas Hold’em poker tournament fund raiser. Play was intense with players wanting to win the grand prize a 50” flat screen television. Players started entering the event at the Rogers-Bentonville Elk’s Lodge BPOE #2144 at one in the afternoon. Play began at two with sixty five players with Chris Peplinski of the Northwest Arkansas Poker Club overseeing play. Intense play continued until almost nine that evening. Drawings were made throughout the event for prizes ranging from gift certificates to a paint ball gun. People played at side tables entertaining themselves while waiting for the final winner to be announced.

Final play came down to the last table consisting of nine players. Onlookers watched as play slowly came down to the final grand prize winner Richard Coleman. Mr. Coleman had just lost his television and was very happy to win the 50” flat screen television.
