Thank You Lillian, Stella & Margaret!

Hey Everyone!

I've typed this blog about a hundred times, but I can't seem to express the words that are in my heart as well as I'd like.  You see, yesterday Lillian and Stella, our winners of last year's Year of Free Treats, came in for their very last free treats.  And it made me want to break down and cry right there in the store.  I know, that probably seems ridiculous, but here's the thing.  Lillian and Stella are truly remarkable dogs.  And I feel blessed and honored to have been able to provide their treats over the past year.  I'm sure I'm still not making any sense.  Perhaps I should mention that Lillian and Stella are search and rescue dogs.  And that they recently worked at Albert Pike State Park.  Along with their owner Margaret Choffel, they do a job that I can only imagine is back breaking and heartbreaking.  I know that I could never bring myself to do their job and that makes me so grateful that they do it, because I also know that families need answers and closure in situations as devastating as the recent flash floods.  So, I feel like giving Lillian and Stella treats for a year was the very least that we could do and I feel like there will never be enough words to express how truly grateful we are that they do the work they do.

And since the words to say all of that are just not making themselves available, I will simply say this.  Thank you Lillian and Stella and thank you Margaret.  I am truly honored to call you customers.

Below is Margaret's winning entry from last year's story contest.  We will be announcing the winner for this year's photo contest at our birthday party on Saturday.
"My name is Margaret Choffel, I am part of the K-9 unit for Washington County Search and Rescue. I've been part of the team for the past ten years. My first search dog, Annie, was a hero, with finds to her credit, sadly died in her prime at five years of age. I currently have two Labrador females, Stella does area air scenting live find searches and cadaver searches.. She has helped to find lost victims, and has been on recovery missions as well, she is five years old and when she isn't doing SAR work, Stella goes to the Veteran's Home weekly to visit the patients, I also show her in local dog shows.. She loves her ball and as a Lab she loves treats as well.

Lillian is a yellow Lab, she is half sister to Stella and is a year younger at four years of age. Lillian's speciality is land cadaver, she has a very nice passive indication and loves treats as a reward. On her off time she also joins her sister in weekly visits to the Veteran's Home and likes to strut in the show ring when she can.. Search and Rescue requires lots of time and effort and is all voluntary. 99% of the expenses are born by the handler, the Girls work for treats, so a year's worth of treats for rewards would be very welcome."

Stella and Lillian in Bigwag
Hey Everyone!

For those of you who weren't able to make it in to read the entries for our year of Free Treats Contest, I wanted to post Margaret Choffel's story here.

My name is Margaret Choffel, I am part of the K-9 unit for Washington County Search and Rescue. I've been part of the team for the past ten years. Winners from our Birthday!

Hello All!

Today is another segment in my line of "I'm so behind it's not funny" blog posts. At our birthday party last Saturday there were lots of contests and prizes given away, not only by us but by the vendors in attendance as well. So I just wanted to congratulate all the winners and share who they are and what they won here.

Donna F. won 2 free pet visits from Sue Blumenfeld, The Errand Girl. Sue runs an awesome business for busy people. She'll do anything from renewing your tags to mailing your packages to grocery shopping!

Angela M. won a free grooming from Aussie Pet Mobile. Melvin and Viviana from Aussie Pet Mobile bring the grooming to you in their mobile pet unit - no more driving to the groomer! They service the entire Northwest Arkansas area. Melvin is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met - he's full of information on everything from dental health to how nutrtion affects your dog's coat.

The NWA K-9 Disc Club awarded three prizes - 1st prize of discs, a leash, a collar and a leash holder went to Claudia H., 2nd prize went to Viviara P. and 3rd Prize went to Dale T. Matt Srum is the president of the NWA K-9 Disc Club and he has done a fantastic job organizing and building this organization. If you're interested in teaching your dog to play disc, check out his website.

The winner of our Biggest Wag contest was Paul K. or rather his dog, Jeff Smith. Jeff Smith was a rescue from a backyard breeder. He came to Paul is terrible shape, in need of food and attention, but now he is a wonderful success story. He wagged so hard he wagged not only his tail but his head. They won a gift basket worth $90.

Rachel Sloan of Rachel Sloan Photography also captured Cary giving Paul the gift basket and lots of other great photos of our event which you can view on her website.

Finally, the winners of our year of Free Treats Contest were Margaret Choffel and her dogs, Lillian and Stella. They were voted winners by our fantastic customers!

WIN A YEAR OF FREE TREATS!

Hey Everyone!

As our birthday party draws near, we are once again giving away a year of free treats. In the past we've done this through random drawing, but this year we're changing it up a little. We decided that we want to give a year of free treats to someone who really loves our treats and our store, so we're letting you tell us why you love Bigwag and the best story wins a year of free treats! Your story will also appear in the Rogers Morning News.

We want to make it easy for you to tell us your story, so there are several ways to enter. You can go to www.contest.bigwag.com and enter there using the online form. You can e-mail us directly at sales@bigwag.com or you can come into the store and pick up an entry form.

You don't have to be a Hemingway to win this contest, just tell us what you tell us everyday - why your dog loves their treats, how the food we sell has made a difference in their coat, how much fun their birthday party was. Just share your best story and you could win!

All entries must be received by 7pm on Saturday, July 18, 2009! So take a minute to tell us right now, because you don't want to miss out on this great opportunity because you put it off. Your dog would never forgive you :)

Contest Rules--no purchase necessary to enter. Your story must be at least 25 words to qualify. The top 10 entries will be selected by Bigwag LLC for customer voting during the last full week in July, with the winner announced on the last Saturday of July. Owners, employees, or employee family members are ineligible to participate. Bigwag reserves the right to cancel this contest with no notice. All stories will become the property of Bigwag LLC. By submitting this form participant gives Bigwag LLC the right to use their name, likeness, their dog's name, and their likeness for advertising and promotional uses only. No private information will be sold or used for any other purpose.

Changing of the Guard

Winner for 2007-2008, Paul Knutson

Winner for 2008-2009, Bonnie Martineck

Hey Everyone!

As you know, we had our second birthday party on Saturday. Each year at our birthday party we give away a year worth of free treats to one lucky winner. Our new winner, Bonnie Martineck of Bella Vista, came in to claim her prize today. Bonnie seems like a great lady. She told me she used to be a vet tech, which I know is a job that requires a lot of work and gets little recognition, so I'm glad she could be our winner. I look forward to seeing her each month as she comes into pick up her free treats.

As fate would have it, last year's winner, Paul Knutson, came in to claim his last month of free treats today as well. The coincidence of both of them coming in on the same day made me reflective of the experience of giving away a year of free treats and how Paul has become part of the Bigwag family over the past year.

Let me tell you a little about Paul - he is one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever met. He quietly gives to the animal community of Northwest Arkansas and never asks anything in return. He has several dogs, each of them rescues, and let me tell you, these dogs are fortunate to have found a home with Paul and his wife.

He has taken in dogs that no one else gave a chance - one was showing signs of aggression to the point that a trainer recommended that the dog be put down. But Paul never considered this option. Instead, he patiently searched for the cause of the aggression. What he came to find out was that the dog was born without hip sockets, which you can imagine caused him immense pain. That dog is now receiving medication to ease his pain, and because of Paul's patience and care, people don't even recognize him as the same animal. Paul also adopted one of the dogs from a raid made in Rogers earlier this year. The dog that was infested with ticks and fleas and had been eating bark from trees because it was so hungry. Paul has nursed this dog back to health and taught him that people can be good and kind. Paul also continues to foster dogs in need, even though he has gone far beyond the call of duty. But perhaps the most remarkable thing about Paul is that he believes he is the lucky one in all of this - lucky to have found such loving dogs, lucky to share his life with such amazing animals.

For me, the remarkable thing about this whole situation is that when we gave away a year of free treats, I thought that the winner would be the lucky one. But the truth is, we were the lucky ones to have gotten the chance to know Paul. I hope he will continue to come in each month so that we can get updates on his furry clan. And I hope that Bonnie will become as much a member of our family in the year to come.

Lots of Love,
Erin
