Changes to Natural Balance

Hey Everyone!

This morning I saw a tweet that from YorkieSpace that read, "Heads up for anyone feeding Natural Balance to their dogs. There has been a formula change. Problems are surfacing on Internet Boards."

Because I like to be informed about news and events concerning dog food, I did a little research on the problem. I came across the following letter that the company sent to a customer who had experienced their dog vomiting after eating the food.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Natural Balance regarding the Potato & Duck Formula. Please know that we have implemented a recent change to this formula. As Natural Balance continues to grow, we have found it increasingly difficult to obtain the quality and quantity of duck meal from the United States that our rigorous standards require. In order to address this issue before supply becomes a problem, Natural Balance has decided to add more fresh duck and potato protein to the Potato & Duck formula. We have found this adjustment enhances the palatability and performance of the product, but may lighten the kibble color. We have been feeding this formula for the last six months to many of our own Natural Balance pets and it has produced exceptional results. A very small percentage of dogs with sensitive stomachs may experience a temporary digestive upset with the formulation change to the Potato & Duck Formula. For this limited number of dogs, we recommend feeding smaller, more frequent meals, combined with the old formula (if available), over a 5 to 7 day period to adjust to the new formula. You may also try any of our other LID formulas, which include the Sweet Potato & Fish, Sweet Potato &Venison, or the Lamb & Brown Rice. Have a good day.

Sincerely,
Kristi Choy, B.S. Animal Nutrition
Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc.

I also looked at the new ingredient statement. It looks like this:
Potatoes, Duck, Potato Protein, Canola Oil (preserved with natural mixed tocopherols), Potato Fiber, Natural Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Natural Mixed Tocopherols, L-Carnitine, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin, (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin D-3 Supplement, Folic Acid.
Now, I do NOT have a copy of the old ingredient statement, but from this ingredient statement and the complaints I found, I have these thoughts:

* First, I recommend that you focus on the ingredients before the fat when analyzing any food. In this case, you have:
Potatoes, Duck, Potato Protein - that's good, no corn, wheat or soy in this food. Also, no meat by-product meals (which is mystery parts, just for the record)

*When looking at a food, you also need to remember that meat meals (like duck meal) stay where they are in the ingredient list, but meats (like duck) actually move down the list because they lose water in the processing. So, when they went from duck meal to duck, it actually moved down the ingredient list, which is why they had to add more potato protein. That's probably where the problems come in, because some dogs are going to be sensitive to the large quantity of potato now present in this food. Potatoes are good, but they are NOT meat and they're harder for some dogs to digest.

*I can understand having a difficult time sourcing duck meal for a growing company. But, I'm also guessing that this food just became cheaper for them to produce as well, because let's face it, potatoes are cheaper than duck.

*Overall, this is still a quality food, it doesn't have any sugars, salt, food colors, by-products or grains. It's probably just a little less quality than it used to be.

One more thought:

Several dog owners report that the company is less than forthcoming about where they are now sourcing their duck, leading many people to believe that the duck is coming from outside the United States. One key indicator of this is consumers report that the packaging now reads "manufactured for" their company based in the United States, rather than "made in the USA". This technique is frequently used by all sorts of companies that know you want products made in the United States. However if it doesn't say Made in the USA, it isn't. If it was really made in the USA, they'd have it in big letters on the packaging. They aren't going to hide that from you. It's possible that the duck comes from a reputable country, such as Canada, but I would be leery if they won't say... That speaks volumes in itself (remember I did not call the company myself, just read internet reports, if you feed this food, I suggest you call the company and ask where the duck comes from)

So, my advice to you, if you're feeding Natural Balance Potato & Duck, is just to take a minute the next time you pick up a package. Look at it like you would a new food, because that's basically what it is.

Keep Your Pet Active!

Hey Everyone!

I came across this article today on the ASPCA's blog and thought it was worth re-posting!

Busy Pets Are Happy Pets: Fun Ways to Keep Your Pet Active

dog playing

It seems like the most natural thing in the world—our pets need food, water, medical care and lots of love. But dogs and cats have other needs, too. Our furry friends need ample physical exercise and mental stimulation to lead truly full and happy lives.

“They need jobs,” says Kristen Collins, CPDT, ASPCA Animal Trainer. Dogs and cats need to stay busy and engaged, but unfortunately most pets are unemployed—they sit at home, chronically bored, waiting for their humans to return from work. And as we all know, an idle pet can quickly turn into a naughty pet when restlessness becomes overwhelming.

“With nothing to do, dogs and cats are forced to find ways to entertain themselves,” explains Kristen. “Their activities of choice often include behaviors we find problematic, like excessive barking or meowing, gnawing on shoes, raiding the garbage, eating houseplants and scratching furniture.”

To prevent behavior and health problems, Kristen recommends the following physical and mental workouts—both when you’re there to join the fun and when your pet is home alone.

Treat-a-Thon 2009

Hey Everyone!

Today is the last day of the very first Treat-a-Thon! So far we've collected 237 treats, which is awesome, but is far short of our goal of 500 treats for the dogs in shelters of NWA. If we don't get any more treats donated before 7pm tonight, we're going to have to decide which dogs don't get treats and I don't want to have to do that job. So, PLEASE stop by and donate a treat to the homeless animals of NWA! (The kitties would love some treats too, if there are any kitty people out there reading this.)

It's super simple, you donate a treat to a homeless animal and you get one FREE to take home and there's no limit. Want to donate one? Get one free. Want to donate ten? Get ten free. Want to donate a pound? You get a pound free! You can't beat FREE! So come help us treat the homeless dogs (and cats) of NWA to a little something special.

Rolling Into Fall - Event Season

Well, as the air turns crisper it seems fall is upon us. Still feels a little early to be having such cool weather, but it reminds me that it is once again Pet Event Season.

Pet events are a lot of fun. They allow local businesses to "Keep Arkansas Funky", so that our neighbors can shop locally and stimulate our own economy. They also are a great tool to socialize your dog, getting them over fear anxiety, playing and sniffing other dogs, seeing other people, and it gives them someplace to go in the car other than the vet, which can develop car ride anxiety. These events can also be a good source of knowledge, since often experts in their fields will be on hand to answer questions on nutrition, behavior, grooming, boarding, and medications.

Here's a recap of some of the big events that are lined up:

Responsible Dog Owner Day
When: Sat, September 12, 11:30am – 1:30pm
Where: Murphy Dog Park (map)
Description: The annual RDOD sponsored by the NWA Kennel Club. Events include Lure Coursing, NWA K-9 Disc Club demonstration, Biggest Wag Contest, vendor booths and more! Burgers will be available from Backyard Burger for only $3 with proceeds benefiting Murphy Dog Park and The Humane Society. I'm glad the NWAKC is continuing this event with James at the helm. This was our first ever dog event we ever attended in 2006, despite the wind and grit in our teeth, it holds a special place in our hearts. I'll never forget all of the weird looks we got that day. I still think not that many people know what a dog bakery does, but we broke onto the seen in our first RDOD. Last years event was cancelled due to inclement weather, but these have been huge events in the past, and are lookign forward to another great one this year.

National Pet Memorial Day
When: Sun, September 13, 4pm – 6pm
Where: Bark Park, Bentonville, AR (map)
Description: Sponsored by Save Our Strays
This is the first year for this event, and it may be the first event at the Bentonville Bark Park since it's completion. Recognizing the importance of remembering our cherished pets, the International Association of Pet Cemeteries (IAPC) has designated the second Sunday in September as National Pet Memorial Day.

Weiner Dog Races
When: Sat, October 3, 9am – 12pm
Where: Glasgow Road Softball Field, Bella Vista, AR (map)
Description: The 3rd annual Weiner Dog races benefit the Bella Vista Animal Shelter. More details will be available at a later date. We attended this event for the first time last year, and it was a blast. I didn't even know that many weiner dogs lived in NWA. So moch fun to see them all running, lose interest and then run off the field, ears flopping. Another great event in Benton County. Should be a great photo op. This is the third year for this event at the softball field in Bella Vista.

Pugfest 2009
When: Sat, October 3, 11am – 2pm
Where: JB Hunt Softball Park, Springdale, AR (map)
Description: We will have games, a fashion show, and other happenings at the event. Ryan Greig with 98.3 KKEG will keep things moving during the day as Pugs, small canine friends and human friends enjoy the day and compare Pug Experiences. If a dog clothes designer would like to participate in the fashion show - please contact me as soon as possible. We already have one designer set up to show their clothes on the RUNWAY (ok sidewalk). Get your costumes ready now and participate in the costume contest and of course - as we do each year - we will crown Mr & Miss Northwest Arkansas Pug - Includes a crown and trophy! If interested in becoming a vendor, contact Reta Parton at rpsodapop@aol.com or call 479.... We had over 120 pugs in attendance last year. This year we expect more! Come enjoy the day and meet our pugs up for adoption. A Pug is a comedian with a fur coat and generously gives love to everyone - come join our celebration. We've got a great pug rescue in NWA, and these little guys are so cute! Come out and support this great group.

Howl-O-Ween Carnival
When: Sat, October 31, 1pm – 4pm
Where: Murphy Dog Park (map)
Description: Costume Contest with 4 categories: cutest, scariest, most creative and owner/dog costumes. Carnival Games Bigwag Biggest Wag Contest Trick or Treat Vendor prize for best decorated Howl-O-Ween Booth prize will be a free 4x3 sign at Murphy Dog Park Silent Auction Food Goodie Bags T-Shirts. Ever since we started attending dog events in NWA, we've heard of the mythical "Howl-o-ween" event, but it has been on hiatus since 2005. This is purportedly going to be huge - silimiar to the Dogwood Walk in Fayetteville, and a ton of fun. We are looking forward to seeing the reemergence of this spooktacular event in NWA.

We should be offering (almost) live coverage via Facebook and Twitter. Be sure you don't miss out!
