Disc Dog Championships Saturday

Hey Everyone!

Here is an article from last Friday's Benton County Daily Record about the Disc Dog Championships that Matt Srum is organizing. This is a great free dog event in Northwest Arkansas. The event is going to be tomorrow, Saturday, April 18th at 1pm at Old Tiger Stadium, and Bigwag is a sponsor. We'll have a booth there as well, so stop by and say hello!

High-flying pups : Bentonville to host disc competition for dogs on April 18.

BENTONVILLE - On a trip to Branson, Mo., last May, Matt Srum watched as a two-time world champion flying-disc dog performed for the crowd.

Watching the dog, Lou Mac, leap to catch flying discs and put on a show to music with owner Ron Watson, Srum decided he would train his 1-year-old puppy, Draykun, to do the same.

Almost a year later, Srum and Draykun are ready to put on a show all their own here in Bentonville as the city hosts the Hyperflite Skyhoundz Canine Disc Championship on April 18.

"I am the only one I know of up here doing it, the disc dog stuff. Me and my dog, we go out there and play, and people watch us, but we do not have anyone to play with," Srum said.

In order to generate interest in the sport, Srum contacted Hyperflite and began setting up a competition. Currently, there are 12 dogs from Oklahoma City, as well as dogs from Tulsa and central Arkansas registered to compete in the afternoon competition, Srum said.

Also invited is 2002 world champion Chuck Middleton of Dallas.

The competition is open to the public for the right price: free. Anyone who has a dog that loves catching flying discs is welcome to register the pet in the competition, Srum said.

During the novice portion of the competition, competitors will have 60 seconds to catch as many flying discs as possible. The distance of each catch determines the number of points awarded, and any dog who gets airborne with all four paws in the air will receive an additional half point, Srum said.

Expert dogs will also compete in a toss-and-catch competition, in addition to performing in a freestyle round. During the freestyle competition, dogs will put their skills to the test with music, Srum said.

Registration will be held before the event's start time at 1 p.m. April 18 at the old Tiger Stadium site at 576 N.W. Tiger Blvd. in Bentonville. Those who wish to compete will need to have their dogs' vaccination records.

The event is free for anyone who wants to compete or just watch the dogs play.
